Mission La Purissima tree 2-A: Graft from a tree at Mission San Carlos.Referencing a planting plan from 1954 showing locations of trees planted in 1937. The pears were planted only in the outer Beds 1, 2, 17 and 18. I propose we use the following code to identify specific trees, based upon the 1954 plan.
Bed One originally had 6 pears, evenly spaced. these are designated 1-A through 1-F, going away from the residence building. The 'Mission Garden Plants' indicates they all cam from Mission San Carlos as grafts. The 1977 L. Gooch plan indicates only 1-B, 1-C, 1-E and 1-F remaining, and 1-F was shown as very small, presumably in impaired health.
Bed Two originally had 8 pears; 2-A and 2-B, closest to the central waldway of the garden, came from San Carlos, while the remaining 6 (2-C through 2-H) came from Mission San Antonio de Padua. The 1977 Gooch plan shows 2-A, 2-C, 2-E and 2-H still existing.
Bed 17 ended at the aqueduct leading to the cistern, and originally had 7 trees: 17-A through 17-G. The Gooch plan shows 17-E and 17-G still existing. According to Ed Rowe, these all were from Mission La Purissima Concepcion.
Bed 18, south of the aqueduct, origninally had 11 pears; 18-A through 18-K By 1977, 6 were left - 18-E and 18-G through 18-K. According to Ed Rowe, these all were from Mission La Purissima Concepcion.
