Leaves are similar to L. dioica, but are not tapered to distinct ends and often have a white, waxy (glaucous) bloom on both the upper and lower surfaces. Flowers are born in early-mid spring, similar in timing to L. dioica and are light yellow in color. Flowers are attractive to a variety of pollinators including butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Spherical fruits are small (e.g. 8-12 mm); red, reddish-orange in color; and mature in early-mid fall. While this species can tolerate and/or persist in shaded conditions, sunlight is needed to achieve flowering/fruiting. Due to morphological similarities shared with L. dioica, a thorough assessment may be warranted to accurately record the species native range. L. reticulata is native to the Midwest from southern Minnesota and southern Wisconsin south to southern Missouri and southern Illinois and in nature is typically restricted to steep slopes or rock outcroppings. This accession was collected from northeastern Iowa (Clayton County) representing the northwestern portion of its native range.2169801Ames 36273
