Selection made at the National Arboretum form seeds from Nanking. Numbered Feb. 21, 1963. NA 10920-157. Selected for its pyramidal habit and compact branching. Tree grew to about 35 feet high in 10 years. From seeds introduced under PI161688, January 1948. A deciduous conifer up to 115' high in the wild state. Bark fissured, dark grey in color, peeling off in old trees. Branches opposite, glabrous, green in the young state, turning brown later and becoming browish-grey in the second or third year. Lateral shoots deciduous in winter, glabrous, opposite. Leaves deciduous, opposite, arranged in two ranks, linear, 1/3 to 1/2" long, 1/24 to 1/12" wide, sessile or nearly sessile, blue-green above, light green below. Flowers monoecious. Staminate flowers axillary and terminal about 1/5" long. Pistillate flowers solitary about 1/3" long. Cones ripening in the first year, pedulous, 3/4 to 1" long, 2/3 to 9/10" wide, dark brown. Selected from over 200 plants growing at the National Arboretum for its pyramidal habit and compact branching. The original tree grew to about 35' in 10 years from seed.1215383PI 286608 NA 34807
