Green GermanyNANot Available1955DONATED03/08/1939CultivarFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Myrtifolius'. Extant plants were grown from cuttings of an accession located in Nursery 5; recorded on accession sheet as being of unknown source. However, a very old card file inventory of Nursery 5 indicates that the plant, which was growing in row 13 S, had come from Glenn Dale labeled Phillyrea latifolia var. media (PI) 131777. From USDA Plant Inventory No. 138: "131752 to 731778. From Germany. Plants purchased from Herman A. Hesse, Weener, Province of Hannover. Received March 8, 1939. [...] 131777. Phillyrea latifolia var. media (L.) C. Schneid." (A generic description of the taxon follows). -SBL2143242PI 131777 NA 7704

Evanston Hospital Assoc., Evalston, Ill. x1/23/64 "I would be most grateful if you could send me a few small twig samples, approximately 15-20 grams of relatives of the lilac (Syringa vulgaris), if possible by air mail, as we need these materials for our studies of blood group substances." The plant growing in the collection as of 2023 does not appear to be fastigiate in growth at all; it is quite rounded and full. It seems that clones grown under this name by others are much the same, so either there is widespread misidentification of cultivated material, or the cultivar epithet is misleading. -SBL2151044NA 77360
