12Ames 36701Brush Creek CanyonArctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. Iowa, United StatesNC7Not Available2025Wild materialThe native range of bearberry is concentrated in the northern portions of North America and is also known from Europe and Asia. In the U.S., the species is found both in the eastern and western edges of the U.S. and as far south in the west as New Mexico and in the east, the nothern portions of Indiana and Illinois. Bearberry is a low-growing (e.g. <12"), creeping, ground-cover that is evergreen that is typically found in gravelly/sandy soils on dry, rocky slopes or exposed bluff edges. Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is currently (2025) listed as Endangered in Iowa (Department of Natural Resources) and has only been documented in two sites in the state (Winneshiek and Fayette counties). The site in Winneshiek County was only documented on 08/11/1930 by Bohumil Shimek (ISC#193002) as "northeast of Hesper on a prairie ridge" and has yet to be rediscovered/confirmed still extant. Thus this accession may technically represent genetics from the only remaining extant site in the state. This accession at Brush Creeky Canyon State Preserve was documented by L. J. Eilers in 1972; T. Lammers in 1972; W. C. Watson in 1989; J. Nekola in 1991; and E. Freese in 2004. Notes from the W. C. Watson specimen (#853) sampled in 1989 indicated the specimen covering a 3 x 2 meter area. Currently (2025) the specimen is only covering a 20 cm x 20 cm area and represented by only a couple of small stems/shoots. The 1974 publication "The Flora of Brush Creek Canyon State Preserve" by L. J. Eilers noted the bearberry specimen on "a unique habitat with sparse prairie vegetation" supporting "Andropogon gerardii, Lespedeza capitata, Euphorbia corollata, Amorpha canescens, and Parthenium integrifolium", where all of these species execept for the Euphorbia corollata and Amorpha canescens were noted as associates on 11/24/2025. 2192992Ames 36701
