| 193 | Ames 36711 | Dry Fork River | Populus grandidentata Michx. | Missouri, United States | NC7 | | Not Available | 2026 | COLLECTED | 02/04/2026 | Just south, southeast of St. James off highway 8 on top of bluff of Dry Fork River, T38N R6W SE 1/4 SE 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec. 33. | 37.96354000, -91.58232000 | 279 | High bluff on steep (60 degree) slope. Dolomite formation. | Wild material | The native range of Populus grandidentata is concentrated througout the northeastern United States with disjunct populations in far south as Kentucky and as far west as central Iowa (Little, E. L. Jr. 1971). Bigtooth aspens are known to be fast-growing trees, making for a quick source of shade in the landscape. As a pioneer species in nature, P. grandidentata is adaptable to a wide range of environments but is considered to be slightly less adaptable than quaking aspen. However, bigtooth aspen is more resistant to canker diseases than quaking aspen (Laidly 1990), potentially making it slightly longer-lived. Bark on big-tooth aspens is generally greyish to greyish-yellow or olive-green compared to quaking aspens where bark is typically white to greyish-white. Leaves and leaf serrations are larger, and the degree of suckering is lower in big-tooth aspens. Both species are well known for their leaves to quake or tremble as the lengthy petioles allow leaves to swivel in the slightest amount of wind. Populus use is well-documented throughout the world and encompasses a wide range of products including energy feedstock, wood chips for pulping fibers, veneer logs, agro-forestry, and phyto-remediation as well as several other environmental applications. Interspecific hybrids of P. grandidentata and P. canescens have superior performance in yield; Hypoxylon canker resistance; and rooting ability compared to pure, N. American aspen genetics. This accession represents genetics acquired from an extreme, perhaps unusual, southern disjunct in Phelps County, Missouri on a steep, dolomite bluff above the Dry Fork River. Despite debate on whether big-tooth aspen in Missouri represents escapes from cultivation or relicts from the past, this accession is currently persisting in a very high-quality native plant community. In addition, big-tooth aspen is not a commonly planted species nor recommended for planting in Missouri. The Missouri Natural Heritage Program tracks this taxon as being a species of concern in the state and thus treated as a native member of the flora of Missouri. This accession is presumed to represent a single clone covering an area of approximately 15 yards x 10 yards totalling 24 ramets where the largest ramet is estimated at 35' in height and 5.5" DBH. Due to this accession originating fom an extreme southern location, it is suspected that this accession would have excellent heat and drought tolerance compared to genetics originating from the typical range in the northeastern U.S. | 2193480 | Ames 36711 |
| 194 | NA 87336 | (P. tremula x P. tremuloides) | Populus hybr. | | NA | | Not Available | 2023 | | | | | | | Cultivated material | Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Populus (P. tremula x P. tremuloides). An existing specimen (one relatively large plant, plus some smaller clonal stems originating from the root system) growing east of the old Salix planting behind the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, where evidently there was once a small collection of Populus. According to Dr. Alan Whittemore, this is probably the hybrid rather than P. tremula or P. tremuloides. There have not been accessions of this hybrid at USNA previously, but it is possible that the plant came in misidentified as one of the parents; it could possibly have originated here, as well. The plant is thriving despite being completely neglected, in a climate that should be nearly too hot. It may be of interest for this reason. -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type. | 2158085 | NA 87336 |
| 195 | Ames 36138 | Muscatatuck NWR | Populus heterophylla L. | Indiana, United States | NC7 | | | 2023 | COLLECTED | 05/30/2023 | Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge located 4.37 miles east, southeast of Seymour, T6N R6E SW 1/4 Sec. 24 | 38.94292000, -85.81076600 | 159 | Edge of stagnant swamp along road. Soils rather mucky/heavy clay. | Wild material | Native to North America, this deciduous tree has a native range that covers the Atlantic coastal plain concentrated in the Carolinas and also along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers along with various, tiny disjunct populations widely scattered across the southeast U.S. (Little, 1971). As an obligate wetland plant, the soils that this species inhabits is typically heavy clay (ranging 24 to 65%) and slightly acidic (soil pH ranges from 4.6 to 5.9) (Johnson 1990). Typical habitat is bottomlands/floodplains that generally have standing, shallow water. Sites that are often too wet for P. deltoides are suitable for P. heterophylla. Swamp Cottonwood can reach 10-20 meters in height and generally has an upright, rounded form. Broadly ovate leaves are rather large reaching up to 25 cm in length and nearly 15 cm wide with abaxial surfaces usually pubescent to partially glabrate. As with many other species in Salicaceae, P. heterophylla is dioecious with staminate and pistillate catkins appearing in early spring and reaching up to 10 and 15 cm in length, respectively. Seeds are dispersed in spring through early summer. Swamp Cottonwood is distinguishable from other Populus largely due to the distinctly cordate leaf bases and distinctive orange-brown pith in young twigs (McMaster 2003). Ornamental characteristics include golden yellow fall color. This taxon is essentially non-existent in the nursery trade and extremely rare in botanical garden and arboretum collections. Due to this species ability to grow in anaerobic, soils heavy in clay, this species may perform well in the typical urban landscape. Its potential to withstand extreme, drought despite being an obligate wetland plant may be similar to that found in Taxodium distichum. Genetics of this accession were collected in southern Indiana. Specimens sampled in nature were approximately 40-50' in height and were clonally (vegetative) spreading by rhizomes. | 2158343 | Ames 36138 |

Deciduous forest. This accession represents genetics acquired from the Des Moines River Valley of central Iowa and considered a disjunct population. P. grandidentata is infrequent to somewhat common throughout parts of the Des Moines River Valley, but very localized. The next closest, native population would be found in Hardin County (Iowa) approximately 50 miles to the northeast near Eldora. In central Iowa, this accession has been noted to have excellent, yellow fall color that typically peaks in mid-October (e.g. 21 October 2015). Fruits usually mature in early May (e.g. 3 May 2017) coinciding with flower initiation on local genotypes of Prunus virginiana. Specimens sampled in nature measuring approximately 60' in height and 16-22" dbh. Due to this accession originating from the western and southern edge of the species native range, it is suspected that this accession would have excellent heat and drought tolerance compared to genetics from areas in the northeastern U.S. | 1949856 | Ames 33965 |

| 206 | NA 84085 | ('Zhonghong' reversion) | Populus deltoides W. Bartram ex Marshall | | NA | | Not Available | 2016 | | | | | | | Clone | Full name as recorded at the U.S. National Arboretum: Populus deltoides ('Zhonghong' reversion). Received as Populus deltoides 'Hongye', but later changed to P. deltoides 'Zhonghong' before renaming due to complete reversion to the wild-type coloration. From Dr. Donglin Zhang, University of Georgia, who collected cuttings from Lishui University campus, Lishui, Zhejiang, China. The name under which the accession was received appears to be abbreviated from 'Zhonghuahongye', which was apparently officially named 'Zhonghong' later. It was discovered in 2000 at the Henan Academy of Forestry in Shangqiu, Henan Province, China as a reddish-leaved (or purple-leaved) bud-sport of Populus deltoides 'Zhonglin-2025'. Both this cultivar and its sport-parent are often listed as cultivars of Populus x euramericana (=P. x canadensis, correctly), but 'Zhonglin-2025' has been tested and confirmed to be pure P. deltoides. Further accession note: "our has a chimeral sport/ photographed it (black/green); in the same catalog as the variegated catalpa". [NOTE: as of May 2024, it does not appear that this plant has ever exhibited the strong foliage color that is supposed to characterize the cultivar, and it is likely a reversion due to an unstable chimera (Kevin Conrad indicates that it has never shown strong purple/red coloration at any point).] | 2153523 | NA 84085 |

They are clonally propagated male trees, hence cottonless, from a clone released 8 years ago to the nursery trade as "Platte" cottonwood. The "Platte" clone was selected, along with three others, as the best of more than 100 sources evaluated (Ying and Bagley, 1976) in Nebraska.
