0PI 676249Tift Long-Headed BulkCenchrus americanus (L.) Morrone S92016CultivarTift-LHB pearl millet has very long panicles (panicle length ranges from 49.5 cm to as much as 72.0 cm, with an average of 59.7 +/- 6.3 cm), but the plants are dwarf in stature (average 107 +/- 9.5 cm) from ground to flag leaf) and are quite resistant to lodging. Because this is a bulk population, there is some diversity in plant characteristics, which will be useful for selection to develop new cultivars or hybrid parents. This germplasm carries resistance to root-feeding nematodes Meloidogyne areniaria (Neal) Chitwood and M. incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood, and leaf spot (Pyricularia grisea). Tift-LHB is moderately susceptible to grain smut caused by Tolyposporium penicillariae Bref., with an average of < 1% smutted grains in 2014. This germplasm restores fertility in crosses with A1 cytoplasm. With adequate spacing plants typically have 2.9 +/- 0.7 productive tillers/plant, and 3.2 +/- 1.3 non-heading tillers/plant. The main tiller averages 13.5 +/- 1.6 leaves. Internodes are typically short; the fourth internode from the top averages 60 +/- 26 mm in length. The panicles are typically candle-shaped or cylindrical, and the rachis tip is usually exposed. Panicle diameter at the widest point (typically near the base) averages 26.3 mm +/- 3.0 mm; rachis diameter averages 7.95 +/- 1.3 mm at the midpoint. Grains are dense near the tip of the panicle, but are generally less dense near the base. Stigmas are mostly non-pigmented and anthers are mostly yellow. Mid-anthesis occurs approximately 60 d after planting, with a wide range of flowering times; Tift-LHB does not appear to be sensitive to photoperiod. Exertion of the panicle is typically negative (average -4.5 +/- 6.1 cm), but this is of little consequence with such long panicles. Grain color varies from cream to gray. Average grain yield per panicle is 33.9 +/- 11.1 g. The average 1000-seed weight is 11.2 +/- 1.1 g, giving an average of 3,024 +/- 861 seeds/panicle. 1933072PI 676249
1PI 664478NM-10HCenchrus americanus (L.) Morrone Nebraska, United StatesS9Image2012DEVELOPEDGenetic materialGenetic Type NM-lO is a genetic male sterile Fsline of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L) R. and Br.L Reg. no. GS-xx, PI xxxxxx, derived from a cross between a single male sterile plant found in line 34 -2B, and 68B. The male sterile plant was found in the Fs maintainer parent 34-2B in an isolation plot for the seed increase of cytoplasmic male sterile seed parent 34-2A4. The male sterility is maintained as a heterozygote (NM-10H) Parent line 34-2 resulted from multiple crosses involving experimental lines introduced from Serere Uganda, Zambia, Fort Hays Experimental Station KSU and IP 18293. 68B was selected from KS 79-2068B also from KSU. Genetic studies indicated that a single recessive nuclear gene, named mS3, is responsible for this male sterility. Anthers on mS3 plants are white, small (2-3mm long), thin, fully emerged but non-pendulous and without pollen. Female fertility is not affected. F1 plants grown from sibbed seed set on the original sterile plant (as a result of pollination from other plants in the maintainer line), were all normally male fertile. F2 populations were grown from four selfed F1 plants. Two F2's showed no male sterility, and two segregated for approximately 20% male sterile plants. Four different maintainer parents (23DBE(Burton,196S and 1981, Burton and Fortson,1966); NM-2B and NM-SB(Andrews et al. 2002), 68B(=843B),(Stegmeier et al. 1998), and two UNL R4 restorer parents (086A4R4 and 9RM/4RML were individually crossed to sterile plants. All F1 plants were male fertile. In the F2 populations of all crosses male sterile plants appeared and were sibbed. Planting sibbed seed from male sterile plants and sibbing to male-steriles again was continued for two more generations in three crosses. Three sibs were then grown out from each cross. The average occurrence of male sterile plants in three families from cross 34 -2B X 68B was 49% in 124 plants; 55% in 67 plants from cross 34-2B X 086A4R4 and 40% in 94 plants from cross 34-2B X 9RM/4RM. The phenotypic appearance of male sterility was similar over crosses and resembled that of the original male sterile source plant. The expression of mS3 male sterility was not affected by photoperiod ( less than 12hr daylength in winter greenhouse versus 14hrs days in field), or to variable temperatures. The seed stock for registration was made from sibbing male-steriles in the last generation from cross (34-2B X 68B).1897571PI 664478

Flowers 55-72 d after early June to early July plantings at Mead, NE. Good restorer of the A1 cytoplasmic-nuclear male sterile system with good combining ability for yield. Grain yields of topcross hybrids on three A1 seed parents were 89%, 85%, and 115% higher than in early, normal, and late plantings, respectively. Seed white to cream color, obovate, hexagonal, and spherical shapes with a size range of 6.9-17.3 g/1000. Panicles compact, candle-shaped, 17-28 cm in length (21.7 cm mean) and 2.1-3.5 cm in diameter with good exertion and upright habit with 1-2 panicles/plant. Anthers yellow with profuse pollen shed.1651232PI 634545

Leaves broad, stem medium-thick, panicles semi-compact, mostly bristled and candle-shaped, which become loose towards the tip. Anthers yellowish at emergence and change to brick color after anthesis. Seed medium sized (8-9g 1000-1), globular in shape and gray in color1467278PI 572307

Panicles long, compact to semi-compact, cylindrical, nonbristled, and can have bent tips. Glumes mostly nonpigmented. Anther color cream to yellow. Grain globular to slightly ovate, light gray to slate gray in color, and medium size (8-10g 1000-1). Plants flower in 48-60 days, mature 80-100 days, and have good resistance to South Asian downy mildew (Sclerospora graminicola) strains. Less affected than hybrids by ergot and smut. 295PI 564586TIFT #5 S-1Cenchrus americanus (L.) Morrone Georgia, United StatesS91992DEVELOPEDBreeding materialComprised of accessions with genes for resistance to rust, leaf spot, smut, and downy mildew. A sample of over a thousand plants from bulked population segregated for 32% and 86% rust and leaf spot resistant plants, respectively. Genes for potentially increasing forage yields and inducing cytoplasmic male sterility. Should have excellent drought tolerance genes because it is 1 of last 3 or 4 species to survive at edge of Sahara Desert. Bottom one or two leaves on some plants may develop brown discoloration due to rust infection, but no pustules are formed. Disease resistance controlled by separate major dominant genes for each disease. Flowers 40 to 42 days after planting and averages 1.0m tall at maturity. Seeds brownish-gray in color.1459487PI 564516

Resistance expressed as small flecks appearing about 8 days after infection and only a low percentage of flecks develop small sporulating pustules after 12 to 14 days. Resistance appears to be dominant and controlled by more than one locus. Plants flower 64 to 68 days after planting. Plants average 4.4 and 3.2 feet tall, planted June 13 and July 18, respectively.
