Degraded fen near small creek. | Wild material | Purple Giant Hyssop is a tall (e.g. up to 6') perennial forb native to the northeastern US. Blooms extend for several weeks in the fall typically August through September and are visited by many pollinators. This accession was collected in northern Missouri and thus represents genetics from the southwestern edge of the species native range. At the collection site, most specimens had white blooms, while some showed light lavender coloration with plants averaging 4.5-5.5' in height. In Missouri, the Natural Heritage Program currently tracks this species ranked as an S1 (Critically imperiled in the state because of extreme rarity or because of some factor(s) such as very steep declines making it especially vulnerable to extirpation from the state.) and has been documented in only six Missouri counties including Adair, Atchison, Clark, Harrison, Schuyler, and Worth. | 2192996 | Ames 36705 |
