0PI 699921'Basin'Hedysarum boreale Nutt. Utah, United StatesW62022DEVELOPEDPRE 01/24/2022CultivarBasin’ is deep-rooted plant that can extract deep soil moisture and nutrients, resulting in significant drought tolerance and winter hardiness. Basin has bright showy pink flowers arranged in a loose raceme. Plant height of Basin varies with environmental conditions, but under favorable growing conditions it ranges between 50 and 76 cm with an average height of 61 cm. The average flowering date of Basin is 141 Julian days (May 20) which was four days later than Timp. Leaflet width at their widest point of Basin averages 7 mm with a range between 6-9 mm and an average number leaflets of 13 per leaf. ‘Timp’ previously the only cultivar of Utah sweetvetch while adapted to a wide range of soil types, can be characterized as prone to seed shatter and overall low seed set and production. Seed yield of basin in three years of the tests was more than double that of Timp at 682 kg/ha compared to 321 Kg/ha. Averaged across three years Basin’s forage yield averaged 1535 kg/ha compared to Timp at 869 kg/ha. In the same trials, forage from regrowth of BASIN averaged 433 kg/ha compared to Timp at 255 kg/ha. Crude protein of Basin from mid-June harvests averaged 29.4% which was no different than Timp but significantly greater than Vernal alfalfa at 21.8%. Crude protein of Basin from September harvests at 14.6 % was less than half that at the June measurement no different thanTimp and just over two percentage points less than Vernal alfalfa. In the same trials NDF of Basin at the June harvests averaged 24.7% was three and four percentage points lower (desirable) than Timp and Vernal alfalfa respectively. At the September test NDF of Basin and Timp as expected increased but were not different from each other but both were significantly lower (desirable) than the Vernal alfalfa.2133107PI 699921
1PI 584480'TIMP'Hedysarum boreale Nutt. Utah, United StatesW61994COLLECTEDBase of the Wasatch Mountains, east of Orem (site 9040975).1520Soil well-drained stony loam. Annual precipitation of 14 to 16 inches.Cultivated materialCool-season perennial herbacious native legume with multiple stems, 1 to 2 feet tall, emerging from a woody crown. Leaves alternate, odd-pinnate with from 11 to 31 elliptic leaflets, gland-dotted and highly variable in size, shape, and hairiness. Inflorescence an elongated, loosely arranged raceme with few to several showy pink flowers. Blooming begins late June, continuing through the summer season. Fruit matures into a flattened, constricted, chainlike pod. Recommended for use on rangeland, mined land, critical areas and to improve upland wildlife habitats. Can be used for beautification and diversity in areas of low maintenance and low precipitation. Best adapted to well-drained, rocky, gravelly, and sand clay loam soils where annual precipitation ranges from 12 to 18 inches.1482391PI 584480
