44Ames 27614'Maple Grove'Linum lewisii Pursh Utah, United StatesNC72004COLLECTED1988Approximately 1.1 miles northeast of Maple Grove Campground, Fish Lake National Forest, Millard County.1910Alluvial fan. Northeast aspect, 10-15% slope, extending from the east side of the Pahvant Range. Deep, well drained, loam soils with variable amounts of gravel and cobble. Average annual precipitation is estimated to be 13 to 14 inches. Associated with bluebunch wheatgrass, Gambel oak, gooseberry-leaf globemallow, mountain big sagebrush, mountain buckwheat, muttongrass, needle-and-thread grass, and western wheatgrass.Wild materialShort-lived (5-7 years) perennial forb with few to many ascending stems arising from a woody caudex. Stems are usually unbranched below with alternately spaced linear to oblong sessile leaves, 4 to 30 mm long distributed throughout. Herbage is glabrous and somewhat glaucous. Perfect flowers are borne in showy cymose clusters on most to all stems. Normal flowers have five petals, sepals, stamens, stigmas, and carpels. Petals vary in length from 12 to 25 mm and in color from deep blue to white. Flowering begins mid-May and lasts for 4 to 6 weeks. New flowers open early in the day and petals are shed within 24 hours of opening. Fruits ripen early July to mid August. The fruit is a 10-celled round to ovoid capsule, 6 to 8 mm long, which opens along intercell sutures at maturity. The small, flattened dark brown seeds average 360 to 530 per gram and become mucilaginous when wet. The plant has a prominent tap root and is not rhizomatous. Mature plants are generally 75 to 90 cm tall under cultivation and 30 to 50 cm tall under natural conditions. Selected from a series of field and greenhouse trials conducted from 1989 to 1993 comparing 19 collections assembled from Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Washington, Colorado, and South Dakota, in comparison with 'Appar' blue flax. Containerized stock from G0 seed was planted in a randomized block design near Orchard, Idaho and Nephi, Utah in 1989. Survival and vigor at the two sites were evaluated for 2 and 4 years, respectively. Seed production and rust resistance were evaluated at the Nephi site in 1990 and 1991. Greenhouse trials assessing emergence and survival from deep plantings were also established in 1991 to evaluate seedling vigor. Stand establishment and seed production in drill rows was evaluated for Maple Grove in comparison to 'Appar' blue flax at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Great Basin Research Center, Ephraim, Utah and USDA, NRCS, Aberdeen Plant Material Center, Aberdeen, Idaho from 2001 to 2003. Maple Grove was selected for release over other accessions based upon drought tolerance, plant longevity, seedling vigor, seed production, and rust resistance. Anticipated uses will include biodiversity enhancement of restoration and reclamation plantings, wildlife habitat improvement, erosion control, and beautification within its zone of adaptation in the intermountain west. It is anticipated that the release will have primary application in restoration seed mixes developed by government and private entities requiring a component of native forbs. Limited horticultural use is also expected including revegetation of highway right-of-ways. Best adapted to sites with well-drained to moderately well-drained soils receiving 300 to 400 mm annual precipitation. It is not shade tolerant and has therefore limited application in closed woodland and forested types. Response to variation in soil pH is unknown.1663706Ames 27614

72Ames 34610JDC/MB/2019/015/894Monarda brevis (Fosberg & Artz) Floden West Virginia, United StatesNC7SHOOT2019Wild materialMany genets noted at collection site in nature consisted of 25-30 stems, but individual stems are widely spaced (e.g. 1-5") apart compared to other populations (four) noted (2019 reconnaisance) where stem spacing was typically observed at 0.25-0.5" apart. Very healthy, dark-green leaves noted in early/mid June, but leaf quality greatly declined when observed in mid-August in contrast to other populations observed in nature that seemed to maintain leaf quality throughout the season. Many plants at this site were defoliated likely due to disease (leaf spot) or tattered likely due to possible insect feeding. Specimens noted were circa 10-12 days from initiation of flowering on 12 June 2019 and during mid-August a few specimens were still observed flowering with about 10-20% of infructescences were still green. The overall phenology of this M. brevis population at this site is quite different in comparison to other populations (four) observed in 2019, with flowering being much later (e.g. 10-25 days); leaf quality lower; and synchronization of flowering extremely variable within genets of this population. 2092646Ames 34610
