40PI 689981'Paradise'Prunus persica (L.) Batsch DAV2014CultivarPer Andy Mariani: An outstandingly sweet, low-acid peach whose flavor remains memorable for long alter eating. Ranks with Nectar, Pallas, and Fei Tao as the great varieties for those who do not tolerate tartness in peaches, Skin white with pink blush, flesh also white, a little red surrounding the pit. Like all low-acid white peaches, remarkably juicy, which flavor suggests its name, 'Paradise'. Not to be missed by any fancier of sweet peaches. A seedling from the town of Paradise, Butte County, California, in the 1940s. Mid August. 600 hrs chill required. Fowler Nurseries' selection. Similar to Hakuto.1943322PI 689981
41PI 689982'Hermosa'Prunus persica (L.) Batsch DAV2014CultivarPer Todd Kennedy: For several years past, this peach was propagated in Southern California under the name 'El Dulce'. One of the most consistent bearers among peaches for Southern California, and of immense productivity anywhere. Fruits are slightly elongated, white, nearly covered with characteristic deep red. Flesh white, freestone, very sweet, low acid. A hybrid of 'J H Hale' x 'Babcock' from the former peach breeding program at U.C. Riverside campus. Highly valued in southern counties where late season peaches of any kind are rare; performs excellently also in low-chill areas of San Francisco Bay and Central Coast. Mid August. 350 chill hours required.1943323PI 689982

123PI 673741Dixon ClingPrunus persica (L.) Batsch California, United StatesDAVFLOWER2006DONATED01/15/2006CultivarOriginated in Linden, Calif., by F.A. Dixon, Canners League of California, San Francisco in 1956. Orange Cling x Australian Muir; sibling of Dixon 2; cross made in 1933; tested as Dix 6-6. Fruit: flesh yellow, turning red if overripe; flavor superior to conventional canning clingstone varieties; season extra early, filling the gap between Fortuna and Cortez; indistinguishable from Dixon 2. Tree: very high yields; indistinguishable from Dixon 2. No longer commercially planted.

Per Andy Mariani: This is probably the most flavorful cling and is often purchased by [his] customers who simply like eating it fresh out-of-hand. It has the firm cling-type texture but is also very juicy. Skin is blushed red, and there’s a little red around the stone; it is also an excellent canner. 800 hours chill @ 2000' a consistant producer. Classic canning cling.

Per Andy Mariani: 'Samarkand' is a first-generation seedling derived directly from a seed brought over from Uzbekistan in 1991. Several generations later, a cross of the strain with similar traits and a California low-acid nectarine resulted in the 'Samarkand Gold.' Unlike 'Samarkand' and similar varieties like 'Silk Road' and 'Maria's Gold' with small, round, golden-colored freestone fruits with a slightly acidic flavor, 'Samarkand Gold' is larger, oblong, semi-cling, with pale yellow fruits that are super sweet with very high Brix levels. Both of the Samarkands require a fair amount of winter chill, at least a couple hundred more hours than 'Ruby Sweet.'

Oblate, white fruits are heavy with juice like sugar syrup, relleved by discreet acidity, flesh that melts away in the mouth, leaving only "luscious" as an adequate description. Once counted as an early peach, it ripens closer to today's midseason. Could be the favorite white peach of middle and South peach growers a century ago. Still vigorous and productive. Batsch California, United StatesDAVFLOWER1996DONATED05/01/1996Cultivated materialPer Todd Kennedy: 'Mayflower', for many years, was America's earliest commercial peach. 'Mayflowe'r is valuable in California for its high eating quality, greater than any peach found in the supermarket in the same season, and elsewhere it remains the best early peach that can be grown. A century ago every fruit fancier knew this peach: large pale fruits with white semicling flesh, extravagantly juicy, but ripening all at once, as a commercial grower would like. Flavor rich among early peaches, high in sugar, but perishable. Probably from North Carolina, was also grown in France and Italy as the first peach of the season. Late blooming, avoids frost damage. Arose in the orchard of a Dr. Marvin in Morristown, New Jersey, 1851. An outstanding peach for the first half of August, before White Hale and Belle of Georgia. 283PI 673617'Sanguine Tardive'Prunus persica (L.) Batsch California, United StatesDAVFLOWER1996DONATED05/01/1996CultivarPer Todd Kennedy: Red-fleshed "blood" peaches have been known to fruit growers for centuries. One of the richest sources for red peaches is the Midi of France, where local red varieties are legion and unique selections have been maintained for a century or more by nurserymen. This, the late blood peach, is latest and darkest of the dozens found in the Midi. The raspberry flavor associated with the anthocyanin pigment is characteristic of the highest-colored blood peaches and very marked in this selection. Beet-red under the skin, somewhat paler around the pit; sugars and acids less noticeable than the raspberry flavor. Mid-September ripening in Morgan Hill, California. 800 hours chill required.1552568PI 673617

Fruit is two and three-fourths inches long, two and three eighths inches wide, roundish-cordate or oval, slightly angular, compressed, with unequal halves; apex pointed, with a large, recurved, mamelon tip; ground color greenish or lemon-yellow, with little if any blush; flesh dry, coarse, tender, sweet, mild; stone one and seven sixteenths inches long, fifteen sixteenths inches wide. The trees are vigorous, productive and little subject to leaf curl but the fruits in New York are often marred by peach-scab; chilling requirement is 850-950.
