Rhamnus cathartica dominant forest.Wild materialThe native range of Ilex verticillata is concentrated throughout the eastern third of the United States as far north as northern Maine west to Minnesota and south to Louisiana and east to the Carolinas (Little, E. L. Jr. 1977). Common winterberry is typically a multi-stemmed shrub that can be trained into a tree potentially reaching 15' in height. The species is dioecious (requiring male representation for fruit set). This species is largely known to inhabit swamps, low woods, and along ponds and streams. Fruits are red and typically persist well into late-winter. White flowers are extremely small, inconspicuous. This accession represents genetics from north, northeastern Iowa, which would be the western extent of the species native range. As of 2026, the current Iowa Department of Natural Resources list of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern species currently has Ilex verticillata in Iowa listed as Endangered. Plants sampled in nature were either single stemmed or multistemmed shrubs with bright red fruit at the time of sampling.2122095Ames 35754
