0PI 564589ARS-2892Sphaeralcea munroana (Douglas ex Lindl.) Spach Utah, United StatesNC71992COLLECTED07/07/1986Hyrum Lake Dam just southeast of Hyrum41.61253500, -111.854697001325Disturbed area on sandy and rocky soils.Breeding materialAccession registered as ARS-2892 (Rumbaugh & Pendery 1993). ARS-2892 was evaluated in comparison with 49 other accessions of S. munroana and other species of globemallows in non-competitive, field trials located in northern Utah and southern Idaho from 1987 to 1992. Evaluation for amount of shoot biomass, leafiness, and seed yield potential repeatedly identified ARS-2892 as the most desirable accession. Native, xerophytic, perennial, forage herb that is drought and heat tolerant, winterhardy and survives well in semiarid environments. Tetraploid with 2N=20 chromosomes. Leaves 3- to 5- parted with denate margins and stellate trichomes. Plant height 20-50cm and the inflorescence often contain more than 25 flowers with attractive brick-red petals. This germplasm qualifies for the Selected Class according to the Utah Crop Improvement Association, the official seed certifying agency for Utah. Seeds of this accession were originally harvested from a native stand in Cache County Utah in 1987 and increased by isolation in a field plot established near Logan, Utah in 1990. 1459560PI 564589

Spach Utah, United StatesW6SEED2025Wild materialThe site is heavily invaded by cheatgrass, and rodents had eaten some of the seed by biting the stems off. Most plants had a lot of viable seed, but some had dropped all seed or were all preseed. Second collection the population is continuos however, soil is more sandy.2196089W6 62913
