232NA 893232025RJLSEUS-30Carya floridana Sarg. Florida, United StatesNANot Available2025COLLECTED10/12/2025Lake Wales Ridge State Forest: Arbucke Tract. The site is accessed along Lake Arbuckle Road/Old Frostproof Road by parking on the roadside next to a gated access point. This road eventually leads to the Lake Arbuckle Park and Campground beyond the collecting site. The population is accessed by foot along a sugar sand trail, approximately 0.27 kilometers from the gated access point.27.71724300, -81.4431250023Growing in full sun on very shallow slopes in the zone between the sugar sand of a dry, xeric Lake Wales Ridge habitat and more mesic-dry edges of Reedy Creek. The habitat is a mix of evergreen and deciduous flora (including some scrub elements) currently recovering from prescribed fire within the last 5 years. It should be noted that Carya floridana is in both the mesic-dry (where it comes tree-form) and xeric shrub habitat (multi-stemmed and much shorter-possibly due to prescribed fire). There is a wide trail/firebreak between the primary scrub habitat and the mesic-dry creek area, possibly protecting larger trees from prescribed fire impacts. Geology: The underlying geology of this area originated in the Pliocene/Pleistocene Era area and is characterized as Tertiary-Quaternary Dunes. The dune sediments are unconsolidated fine to medium-coarse quartz sand with varying amounts of disseminated organic matter. The sands form dunes at elevations greater than 30 meters mean sea level. (Source: USGS Florida Geologic Map Data). Soil: [See Collector’s Note in brackets at end for possible revision to site soil.] The soils at this site are mapped as Pompano Series fine sand (85 percent) with small contributions from Basinger Series (5 percent), Anclote Series (5 percent) and Placid Series (5 percent). This Pompano Series soil complex typically consists of very deep, very poorly, and poorly drained soils that formed in thick beds of sandy marine sediments. Pompano soils are on flatwoods, in low broad flats, and to a lesser extent, depressions, drainageways, and flood plains, and on marine terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Generally speaking, the deeper the soil profile, the fine sands range in color from light and dark gray to gray brown and light brown; soil pH ranges from slightly to moderately acid. Occasionally masses of oxidized iron can be found at depths below 15 cm. [Collector’s Note: The field collecting site NRCS mapped soil described above does not seem to match the existing conditions very well. The field collecting site is situated 3+ meters above Reedy Creek which located less than 10 meters to the east and south in what appears to be a transitional zone. It is also slightly downslope (approximately 1 m) and bordering closely the xeric Archbold Series soils about 25 meters to the north. This collector believes that through long-term, slow erosional impacts, Archbold Series soils have overlain Pompano Series soil to form an “overburden/cap” layer of undetermined depth. The resultant “soil” is a more complex unconsolidated-reworked surface pedon that has created modified conditions, allowing more drought-loving plants to gain a foothold.] Slope: 0 to 3 percent. Aspect: Southwest.Wild material2197494NA 89323

East-central Iowa and the western border of Pennsylvania represent the northwestern and northeastern limits, respectively. Perhaps surprising, the native range of Kingnut hickory does not completely cover any individual U.S. state (Little, E. 1971). Kingnut hickory is a long-lived, large (30 to 45 meter tall) shade tree that typically inhabits floodplains and bottomlands. This accession represents genetics from a disjunct population in eastern-central Iowa and thus the extreme northwestern edge of the species native range. Specimens sampled ranging between 10-20" DBH. Nuts for Carya laciniosa are generally 4-6 cm long, 3.5-5.0 cm wide, globose to slightly ellipsoid. Very palatable, sweet nuts that are very comparable to pecans. Nuts for this accession averaged approximately 3.8 cm long and 3.8 cm wide, with specimen #2 being slightly longer than the others by approximately 1.0 cm. 2192963Ames 36700

Missouri, United StatesBRWPLANTNot Available2025COLLECTED09/22/2025Sand Prairie Conservation Area (SPCA) just 3.30 miles east of Benton, R28N R14E SW 1/4 SW 1/4 SW 1/4 Sec. 10.37.09800000, -89.50237000103Sand prairie.Wild materialThe native range of sand hickory (Little, E. 1977) is concentrated in the southeastern portion of the U.S. In Missouri, Carya pallida has a state ranking of S2 (Imperiled in the state because of rarity due to very restricted range, very few populations or occurrences, steep decliines, or other factors making it very vulnerable to extirpation from the state) and thus far has only been documented in Scott and Stoddard counties. The species was first reported in Missouri in 1994 by T. E. Smith who noted the trees which appeared to be morphologically intermediate with C. texana. This germplasm represents genetics from the Sand Prairie Conservation Area (SPCA), which represents the extreme northwestern edge of the species native range. The SPCA is an 80 hectare upland sand prairie located within the Blodgett Sand Terrace of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain in southeastern Missouri. It is one of the few remaining sand prairie/sand savanna habitats in the state. A floristic survey of the SPCA (Wibbenmeyer et al. 2010) resulted in collection of four Carya vouchers (#320, #321, #322, and #327) collected by Wibbenmeyer, J. and deposited at the Travis Brooks Herbarium at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) and at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MNH) herbaria. Note: these four vouchers collected at SPCA were recorded and currently remain labeled as Carya texana and may suggest that either both species exist at SPCA or simply separating these two species is difficult and/or hybrids are present. Sand hickory is identified by the dense tufts of curly fascicles of hairs on the rachises and midribs and also silvery scales on the lower leaf surfaces. Bud scales have persistent reddish brown bud scales. Bark is grey and deeply furrowed and firmly attached. Trees can attain heights up to 30 meters. Extremely drought tolerant and essentially restricted to dry, upland sandy sites. Nuts are palatable, sweet. Based on Beckman et al. 2021, the sand hickory is one of the three most under-represented species of hickory held in ex situ collections. 2192822Ames 36699

The native distribution of C. glabra includes mostly the eastern half of the U.S., with northern limits stretching into southern Michigan with western limits touching the eastern Iowa border. Pecans, C. illinoinensis, are economically important due to their utilization via nut production for human consumption, while the true hickories are extremely valuable for wildlife, wood working, and of course providing that “hickory-smoke” flavor to meats. C. glabra meats are not known for being consumed via humans, but are attractive to various birds and animals. Their presence is likely lacking in the human diet due to the difficulty in extracting the meats. Notable ornamental characteristics include newly emerging foliage that resembles a flower, and yellow/brown fall color. Foliage is typically very clean with little to no foliar diseases. Carya are not a commonly planted species via the nursery trade largely due to the presence of an extensive taproot system that makes transplanting difficult. While the average homeowner may claim “nuts” in the landscape are an undesirable trait or a nuisance, attention should be turned to the benefits of nuts in the landscape. Generally it is difficult to find nuts on the ground as wildlife quickly eat and gather them. Hickories tend to be labeled as “slow growing”, which is definitely not true. Carya are only slow growing during the first few years of establishment as growth is focused on root growth. Shortly after establishment, growth on a properly planted Carya can be considered extremely vigorous with annual growth easily surpassing two to three feet per year. All Carya are noted for being extremely drought tolerant, while C. illinoinensis, C. cordiformis, C. acquatica, and C. laciniosa are also flood tolerant. This species is adapted to extremely dry soils and should not be planted in wet soils.1940349Ames 33356

The species is relatively tolerant to alkaline and slightly acidic soils and can tolerate both extreme drought and severe flood events. However, well-drained soils are preferred. Genetics of this accession represent the extreme northern edge of the species native range with nuts typically reaching maturity in the last week of September into the first week of October in Iowa. Specimens at the collection site in nature measured ~25 inches DBH, with the largest specimen sampled measuring 40.5 inches DBH. Nut measurements (determined by averaging measurements (mm) from 5 randomly selected nuts off a single mother tree) were variable. Averaged measurements (length/width) recorded from 5 mother trees are as follows: tree #4: 23/15 mm, tree #5: 17/12 mm, tree #6: 26/16 mm, tree #7: 24/15 mm, and tree #8: 24/12 mm. Noted observations of progeny from the 2011 collection noted Tree#4 as having strong resistance to the black pecan aphid, Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Davis)(Hemiptera: Aphidadae). Recollection in 2024 found Tree#4 measuring 42.5" DBH dead as the result of major flooding events in 2013, 2014, and 2019 where floods in 2013 persisted for nearly three months. Flood stage for this population of pecan resides at 538 MSL (Mean Sea Level) which can be compared against data from the Mississippi River Lock and Dam 17 (Flood Events 2009-2024), where water levels were recorded 10-12' above ground level where multiple trees of Ames 30882 have been sampled. 1865828Ames 30882
