0PI 692164ALPAX-LGMedicago hybr.Wisconsin, United StatesW62019DEVELOPEDPRE 11/26/2019Breeding materialAlfalfa Perennial Annual Crosses-Large, ALPAX-LG, is a product of research on the feasibility of crossing perennial and annual species of Medicago, plus selection for large plant and seed size. ALPAX-LG is intended as a source of new variation for alfalfa breeding, especially large plant and seed size. Other traits segregating in ALPAX-LG include flower color, number of flowers per raceme, pod shape, leaf size and shape, size and extent of serrations, and new plant and root morphology. Moreover, variation will continue to be produced by recombination in advanced generations of ALPAX-LG. Hence, intercrossing and generation advance is recommended. ALPAX-LG has not been tested for disease, insect, or stress, reactions. 2098557PI 692164
1PI 691838ALPAXMedicago hybr.Wisconsin, United StatesW62019DEVELOPEDPRE 11/05/2019Breeding materialAlfalfa Perennial Annual Crosses, ALPAX, is an off-shoot of research on the feasibility of crossing perennial and annual species of Medicago. ALPAX in intended as a source of new variation for use in alfalfa breeding. There is new variation in the size of seed, leaves, general morphology, and fertility, including autogamy. Hence, it should be useful in restructuring alfalfa. Traits segregating in ALPAX include flower color, number of flowers per raceme, seed size and shape, leaf size and shape, size and extent of serrations, and new plant and root morphology. Also included are pod size and shape, low to high pollen production, and low to high levels of autogamous seed production. Furthermore, recombination in advanced generations will continue to produce new variation. Hence, intercrossing and advancing generations is recommended. ALPAX has not been tested for disease, insect, or stress reactions.2097462PI 691838
2PI 690775Alborea 301Medicago hybr.Wisconsin, United StatesW62019DEVELOPEDPRE 06/04/2019Breeding materialMedicago arborea is a woody perennial bush, native to the Mediterranean region. M. arborea traits of interest include robust stature, large leaves, drought tolerance, large seeds, winter activity, and frost tolerance. Frost tolerance was unexpected, but M. arborea plants have been left in the field until early December, endured several frosts including minus 10C, and retained their green leaves when moved to the greenhouse. Surplus plants left in the field have been observed to grow shoots half meter tall into deep snow drifts. Thus, M. arborea plants are winter active and frost tolerant, as are some Alborea plants. The morphology of Alborea plants is variable, and ranges from resembling alfalfa to resembling M. arborea, with the majority of the plants somewhere in between. Many Alborea plants are more robust than alfalfa, with larger leaves and flowers, and larger pods and seeds. Alborea plants tend to have narrow crowns, and a more branching root system than alfalfa. About half of Alborea plants will have a range of variegated flower color due to the yellow from M. arborea and the purple from alfalfa. Most of the remainder will have either yellow or purple flowers, plus a few plants with cream flowers. Alborea seed production in the field isolation with wild bees is about 80% of alfalfa. If competing bloom of alfalfa is present, Alborea seed production is scant. Alborea crosses well with alfalfa in hand crosses in the greenhouse, thus germplasm can be easily transferred to alfalfa. Moreover, most Alborea X alfalfa progeny express positive heterosis.2092662PI 690775
3PI 690431WISFAL-3Medicago sativa L. subsp. falcata (L.) Arcang. Wisconsin, United StatesW62019DEVELOPEDPRE 03/07/2019Breeding materialWisconsin tetraploid M. falcata, WISFAL-3, is the last in a series of three tetraploid populations of M. falcata developed from 16 diploid Plant Introductions. The first in the series was WISFAL (PI 560333), the second WISFAL-2 (PI 659349), and third WISFAL-3. Elevation of diploid germplasm to the tetraploid level permits efficient germplasm transfer to alfalfa in tetraploid X tetraploid crosses. WISFAL-3 plants are robust with broad crowns, branched root system, and yellow flowers. When cut for hay, WISFAL-3 produces a large first crop and less in succeeding crops. It has not been tested under grazing but is expected to do as well as WISFAL-1 that persists well in pastures. WISFAL-3 was bred for adaptation by three cycles of crossing plants that survived for five years in three different nurseries. This resulted in WISFAL-3 being the most persistent of all lines after nine years in a nursery, near Madison, WI (2009-2018). WISFAL-3 maintained a visual stand with no large gaps, while WISFAL-1 and several alfalfa cultivars including Vernal had some survivors, but large gaps in stand. Recurrent selection for adaptation/naturalization was effective, and resulted in the remarkable persistence of WISFAL-32091750PI 690431
4PI 674814HC2Medicago sativa L. subsp. falcata (L.) Arcang. Wisconsin, United StatesNLGRPNot Available2015DEVELOPEDBreeding material`HC2? is an autotetraploid (2n = 4x = 32) yellow flowered alfalfa germplasm (Medicago sativa subsp. falcata). This germplasm has been selected for increased dry matter yield and fall growth. Three replicates of ten plants each of 32 halfsib families of IAMF102 were planted at the three selection locations in semi-sward plots. Ten plant halfsib family plots were space planted in a 2 by 5 plant grid (30cm between plants). Halfsib family plots were separated from each other by 45cm on the plots long axis and 120cm on the plots short axis. Plants were greenhouse established during May 2004 and transplanted to field locations in August 2004. Plants were clipped and evaluated regularly during the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons. During September (Ames, IA) and October (Arlington and Prairie du Sac, WI) 2006 after the onset of fall dormancy response by the plants plant selection was conducted at all three locations. All plants within a halfsib family were visually inspected; the highest yielding plants within each family were dug up. All plants from a family were lined up and above ground biomass fresh weight was measured on the visually selected plants. Of visually selected plants the best one or two plants per location per halfsib family were brought into the greenhouse. A total of 102 plants were brought in from the field to overwintered in the greenhouse of these 77 plants survived and were transplanted into an isolated crossing block at the US Dairy Forage Research Center Farm in Prairie du Sac, WI in April 2007. Bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) were used to open pollinate plants for several months. Halfsib seed was harvested from individual plants and equal quantities of halfsib seed of 60 of the 77 selected plants were bulked to form syn1 seed. A small quantity of syn1 seed was planted in Idaho in April 2008 were syn2 seed was grown using alfalfa leafcutter bees (Megachile rotundata) and harvested in autumn 2008.1926852PI 674814

11PI 655519'DON'Medicago sativa L. subsp. falcata (L.) Arcang. Utah, United StatesW62008DEVELOPEDPRE 2008CultivarDon a diploid falcata alfalfa (Medicago sativa subsp falcata L.) developed by the Forage and Range Research Laboratory in Logan, Utah in cooperation with the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, Utah State University. Recent interest in falcata alfalfa has been high due to its value for increasing the productivity of rangelands. Don was selected for persistence under harsh conditions, uniform yellow flower color, increased seed production and large stature plants. Don traces to PI20725, an original collection made by N.E. Hansen in the Don Province of Russia. Don was tested as AU021. Don is significantly more persistent than typical sativa type alfalfas and is meant for use in mixed plantings with grasses either in range or pasture situations typical of the Intermountain region of the Western U.S. In comparative trials, including irrigated and non-irrigated, where 25 to 50 percent mortality was observed on sativa alfalfas, Don showed no mortality. When used in mixtures the production advantage with tall fescue and meadow brome ranged from 10 to 32 percent. When grown with crested wheat grass on dry rangelands, similar production advantages are expected which will make rangelands more productive. Furthermore, when grown in mixtures with grasses, Don will not dominate; rather it has a low growth habit and stays well below the canopy of most cool season grasses.1790454PI 655519

Saskatchewan, CanadaW62008DEVELOPEDPRE 05/13/2008CultivarA falcata type alfalfa with a high level of fall dormancy, rated at a 1 level. Very persistent when grown in mixed swards because it is competitive and has good winter survival ability. Long term experiments (more than 3 years) have shown that AC Yellowhead is a high yielding cultivar and is recommended to be included in pasture and hay mixes intended for long term productivity, particularly if a single cut hay crop is intended. Has moderate resistance to bacterial wilt caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. insidious and appears to have a form of field resistance to verticillium wilt caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. insidiosus and appears to have a form of field resistance to verticillium wilt caused by Verticillium alboatrum.1777975PI 654046
14PI 644249IAFAL-C3Medicago sativa L. subsp. falcata (L.) Arcang. Wisconsin, United StatesNLGRPNot Available2007DEVELOPEDBreeding materialThree replicates of ten plants each of 46 halfsib families of IAMF101 (syn 1 seed) were planted at the three selection locations in semi-sward plots. Ten plant halfsib family plots were space planted in a 2 by 5 plant grid (30cm between plants). Halfsib family plots were separated from each other by 45cm on the plots long axis and 120cm on the plots short axis. Plants were greenhouse established during February 2004 and transplanted to field locations in early May 2004. At the two Wisconsin locations halfsib machine harvestable dry matter yield and plant height was taken on halfsib plots on: June 1, 2005; June 27, 2005; and July 26, 2005. Based on halfsib family dry matter yield data 17 of 46 halfsib families were selected (among halfsib family selection intensity 37% or k = 1.02). A low among halfsib family selection intensity was used to maintain population genetic diversity. In early September 2005 at all three selection locations individual plant fresh weights were taken on all plants in the 17 selected halfsib families. At each location within each halfsib family the two heaviest plants were selected (within halfsib family selection intensity 6.5% or k = 1.95). In early autumn 2005 the 102 selected plants from all three locations were combined in the US Dairy Forage Research Center greenhouse and allowed to reach full bloom. Bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) were used to open pollinate plants for several months. Some supplemental hand-pollination was accomplished as well. Halfsib seed was harvested from individual plants and equal quantities of halfsib seed of 66 of the 102 selected plants were bulked to form syn 1 cycle 3 seed. 15PI 643446IAMF101Medicago sativa L. subsp. falcata (L.) Arcang. Wisconsin, United StatesW62006DEVELOPED09/2006Breeding materialGenetically broad based tetraploid (2n=4x=32) yellow-flowered alfalfa, pods range from falcata (sickle-shape) to single coiled. Developed by two cycles of recurrent phenotypic selection for persistence, autumn regrowth, and vigor from a broad based, yellow-flowered alfalfa germplasm collection. Parent plants were selected on Sept. 22, 1999 from a germplasm evaluation trial at Iowa St. Univ. Agronomy and Agric. Engineering Farm near Ames, IA that had been planted in spring 1997. Selection was based on yield performance, freedom from disease and insect pests, and autumn regrowth. Experimental falcata population IA-3018 was developed at Iawa State Univ by C.P. Wilsie in 1960's. Parental plants were intercrossed by hand in the greenhouse at Ames, IA during the winter of 1999-2000 and equal quantities of seed from each parent were bulked. Seeds were germinated in spring 2000 in the greenhouse, and approx. 1000 seedlings were transplanted to the field at the iowa State Univ Agronomy and Agric. Engineering Farm at Ames, IA in May 2000. In Sept. 2003, 56 plants were selected based on persistence, vigor, autumn regrowth, moved to the greenhouse, and intercrossed. Equal quantities of seed from each plant were bulked to form the Syn 1 generation of IAMF101. Syn 2 seed was produced in Idaho in 2004 and 2005. This falcata population has better fall growth compared with other falcata populations.1712480PI 643446

Developed from one cycle of selection. Germplasms 5291/88 and 5299/88 obtained from Institute of Agrobotany, Hungary. Experimental falcata populations IA-3018 developed at Iowa St. Univ. by C.P. Wilsie in 1960's. Lodgepole is naturalized falcata population found in the Grand River National Grassland near Lodgepole, SD. The SD 201 plant was tetraploid, developed by treating seed of the SD 201 germplasm with colchicine. The 32 parental genotypes were selected from among 104 genotypes that had been testcrossed to four elite alfalfa populations. Selections were based on testcross performance for yield in field trials at the Iowa St. Univ. Agronomy and Agric. Engineering Farm near Ames, IA and at the Iowa State Univ. Northeast Res. Farm near Nashua, IA from 2002 to 2003. Parents were intercrossed by hand without emasculation in the greenhouse during the winter 2003-2004. Equal quantities of seed were bulked form each parent to constitute the Syn 1 generation of the IAMF102 population. Syn 2 seed was produced in Idaho in 2004 and 2005. Has moderate frequency of 'creeping rooted' alfalfa. Source populations of the creeping rooted trait are PI 494661, PI 631579, andPI 631857. 18PI 642778'DEVINE'Medicago minima (L.) Bartal. Texas, United StatesNLGRPNot Available2006DONATED2005CultivarWinter annual legume with a high hard seed content, good freeze tolerance, and has proven to persist for years in pastures from north central to south Texas. The plant germinates with good vigor in the fall when the rains come, grows throughout the winter and will mature and die in April or May. Flowering is indeterminate, with seed setting over several weeks. Seeds are set in burrs (4 to 5 seeds per burr) with spines about 2 to 3 mm long. Devine typically has a seed mass of about 0.09 to 0.11 g per 100 seed. Forage yield is about 3000 to 6000 kg ha-1 when grown as a monoculture. Dry matter yields in a perennial grass stand are usually much less, but it is usually sufficient to replace most of the N-fertilizer required in pasture systems in semi-arid central Texas.1701748PI 642778

Texas, United StatesW6Not Available1999DEVELOPEDCultivarWinter annual legume with high hard seed content, good freeze tolerance; proven to persist for years in pastures in Central and South Texas. Germinates with excellent vigor in fall with rains, grows throughout winter and matures and dies in April. Indeterminate flowering, seed sets over several weeks. Seeds set in burrs (about 5 seeds per burr) with spines about 1.4 to 1.6 mm long. Typically has seed mass of about 0.23 to 0.33 g per 100 sd. Forage yield normally about 4500 kg ha-1 when grown as monoculture. Dry matter yields in perennial grass stand usually much less, but usually sufficient to replace most of N-fertilizer required in pasture systems in Central and South Tex.1587855PI 612354
