| 11 | NA 89175 | 2025RJLSEUS-19 | Chionanthus sp. | Florida, United States | NA | | Not Available | 2026 | COLLECTED | 10/06/2025 | Eglin Air Force Base: collected along Military Road 217. Plants growing in two groups separated by about 0.4 kilometers. Latitude and longitude of record is for the first of the two sites. Coordinates recorded are 30.507417, -86.402637 (Site 1-xeric site); 30.509243, -86.398855 (Site 2-mesic site). | 30.50741700, -86.40263700 | 5 | Growing in two groups separated by about 0.4 kilometers. The first site is xeric and sloping with open and exposed areas, mostly in full sun conditions with the plant community comprised primarily of broadleaved evergreens ranging from almost groundcovers to approximately 5 m tall except for a few scattered Pinus clausa and Quercus myrtifolia/geminata trees about 7-8 m tall. The second site, to the north, is in light shade to shade and less than 0.5 meters above a seasonally moist drainage area under more mesic to mesic dry conditions. This is a variable density forested habitat with numerous mature trees (approximately10-15 m tall) mostly Pinus palustris and Quercus geminata/virginiana. The understory is layer is dense to occasionally nearly impenetrable and dominated in much of the area by Sabal minor; the litter layer and needle cover from Sabal minor and Pinus palustris is significant. Soil note: This area is a complex intersection of a variety of soil types, likely due to the rolling nature of the land and nearby creeks. Interestingly, though, both Chionanthus sites are found on Lakeland Series soils. Elevation: 4 to 6 m. Slope: 0 to 7 percent. Aspect: Northeast. Soil: The soils of this area are characterized as Lakeland Series sand, 0 to 5% (12) slopes which consists of very deep, excessively drained, rapid to very rapidly permeable soils on uplands. Other soil series interbedded with the Lakeland Series, vary in percentages from 2-6% including Troup, Bonfay, Foxworth, Fuquay, Albany, and Chipley. Lakeland Series soils formed in thick beds of eolian or marine and/or fluvio-marine sands. Thickness of the sand exceeds 2 meters. Silt plus clay in the upper meter ranges from 5-10 percent. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to moderately acid throughout. Geology: The underlying geology of this area is characterized as undifferentiated Quaternary Sediments. Much of Florida's surface is covered by a varying thickness of undifferentiated sediments consisting of siliciclastics, organics and freshwater carbonates. Where these sediments exceed 6.1 meters thick, they were mapped as discrete units. To subdivide the undifferentiated sediments, those sediments occurring in flood plains were mapped as alluvial and flood plain deposits (Qal). Sediments showing surficial expression of beach ridges and dunes were mapped separately (Qbd) as were the sediments composing Trail Ridge (Qtr). Terrace sands were not mapped (refer to Healy [1975] for a discussion of the terraces in Florida). The subdivisions of the Undifferentiated Quaternary Sediments (Qu) are not lithostratigraphic units but are utilized to facilitate a better understanding of the State's geology. The siliciclastics are light gray, tan, brown to black, unconsolidated to poorly consolidated, clean to clayey, silty, unfossiliferous, variably organic-bearing sands to blue green to olive green, poorly to moderately consolidated, sandy, silty clays. Gravel is occasionally present in the panhandle. Organics occur as plant debris, roots, disseminated organic matrix and beds of peat. Freshwater carbonates, often referred to as marls in the literature, are scattered over much of the State. In southern Florida, freshwater carbonates are nearly ubiquitous in the Everglades. These sediments are buff colored to tan, unconsolidated to poorly consolidated, fossiliferous carbonate muds. Sand, silt and clay may be present in limited quantities. These carbonates often contain organics. The dominant fossils in the freshwater carbonates are mollusks. In areas “broadleaved scrub” vegetation is so dense, that it is almost impenetrable. Elevation: 9 to 11 meters. Slope: 0 to 3 percent. Aspect: Variable. Soil: The soils of this area are characterized as Foxworth Series (95 percent) sand, 0 to 5 percent slopes (8). Other soil series interbedded with the Foxworth Series, vary in percentages from 1-4 percent including Lakeland and Chipley. The Foxworth Series consists of very deep, moderately well to somewhat excessively drained, rapid to very rapid permeable soils on broad uplands and side slopes. They formed in sandy marine or eolian sediments in the Southern Coastal Plain (MLRA 133A), The Eastern Gulf Coast Flatwoods (MLRA 152A), The Atlantic Coast Flatwoods (153A) and the Tidewater Area (153B). Thickness of the grayish brown to light yellowish-brown sand exceeds 2 meters. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to slightly acid throughout. One seedling tree of NA 37681 (37681-Z) was assessed by Dr. Richard Olsen and determined to be a unique male form that is worthy of trial for street tree use. It was the result of OP seed from Kunming Botanical Garden in 1975. New number assigned 12/19/2014 to reflect the tree's selection status. Dr. Olsen compared molecular markers of various Chionanthus retusus accessions and found that this accession is of purely Korean origin and closely related to the old Arnold Arboretum material of Korean provenance, so the source plants at Kunming are clearly also of Korean background. Material sent out for grafting; to be distributed and evaluated. In 2019, a cultivar name 'Confucius' that had been informally under consideration by Dr. Richard Olsen was published for this selection by M. A. Dirr and K. S. Warren in The Tree Book: Superior Selections for Landscapes, Streetscapes, and Gardens. | 2152867 | NA 82300 |
